Overcome any giant in your life by applying these 4 Steps To Face the Giant in Your Life and conquer it today!
What giant are you facing in life? Is a mountain of debt screaming at you? A daunting diagnosis dominating your thoughts? An addiction driving you? A possible breakup threatening your marriage?
If anyone in the Bible knew about facing giants, it was David. David went to visit his brothers on the battlefield and found himself facing Goliath—an almost-10-foot-tall giant tormenting and intimidating the entire army of Israel with his daily taunts.
Life comes with giants the enemy uses to strike terror in your heart, flood your mind with worst-case scenarios, and stop you in your tracks. But, like David, you can overcome such giants by knowing your covenant with God and following the same 4 Steps To Face the Giant In Your Life that David did; you can defeat those giants every single time!
Step 1: Identify Your Giant
“David asked the soldiers standing nearby…. ‘Who is this pagan Philistine anyway, that he is allowed to defy the armies of the living God?’” –1 Samuel 17:26
David identified Goliath as the giant in his life—the one who had come out against the armies of God. How do you identify your giant? Check your mind and thoughts. Where have your thoughts been going? Whatever you have been worrying about is typically where your giant lies. Are you thinking about the bills you can’t pay? A recent diagnosis from a doctor? A child you aren’t sure how to reach? Your thoughts expose your giant.
To identify your giant, it’s important to recognize what is and what is not of God. The devil comes to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). If something has come to your life to steal, kill or destroy, it is not of God, it’s a sickness or disease or an unexpected bill that you can’t pay. It could also be a fearful mindset, an insecurity that continues to hang around long after Jesus paid for you to be free of it.
When David called Goliath “this pagan Philistine,” he was exposing Goliath’s true identity, which was not of the house of Israel and not in covenant with God. Goliath came to torment the people of God and to steal from them. In identifying your giant, like David, call it what it is—something that has come to steal, kill or destroy.
Step 2: Jesus Defeated Your Giant
“When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God!” –1 Samuel 17:34-36
David knew his covenant with God, and because of that, he experienced victory after victory in defeating the lions and bears that came to devour the sheep from his flock. David knew that God would help him, back him, support him. This is why he was able to defeat the giant Goliath. Knowing what belongs to you in your covenant with God is important to facing and defeating the giant in your life.
The Bible says that the devil prowls around like a lion seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). You can withstand him by being firm in the faith (1 Peter 5:9), knowing that Jesus defeated him. In fact, Jesus already defeated whatever giant is threatening you. Jesus defeated the principalities and powers, making a show of them openly (Colossians 2:15). Any giant that has come against you has already been defeated by Jesus, and you can take your stand in faith against it.
Step 3: Declare Words That Reinforce Your Giant’s Defeat
“The LORD who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!” –1 Samuel 17:37
David declared words that reinforced Goliath’s defeat. He declared the end from the beginning. He reminded himself that the God who rescued him many times before would rescue him again. You can do the same thing, reminding yourself of all the times God has come through for you.
Then while looking at your giant—your empty bank account, your painful body or a loved one who is making bad choices—you can declare the Word of God. You can declare the truth of your covenant with God and all that it provides. If you need finances, declare God’s Word that He meets all your needs in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). If you need healing, declare that by the stripes of Jesus, you are healed (1 Peter 2:24). If you are praying for a loved one, you can pray that God opens their eyes to the truth, and that they will turn from darkness to light (Acts 26:18). By declaring the truth of your covenant, you are reinforcing your giant’s defeat.
Step 4: Speak Words Directly to Your Giant
“You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today the LORD will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel!” –1 Samuel 17:45-46
Never run toward your giant with your mouth closed! Instead, speak the Word of God and keep speaking it. That’s how you activate God’s covenant within you. It’s how you put it to work in your life. Mark 11:23 says, “I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart.”
This is what David did the day he faced his giant. He spoke covenant words directly to his giant—covenant words that God honored and executed on David’s behalf.
Whatever giant you are facing, you can overcome it by activating these 4 Steps To Face the Giant in Your Life. Instead of taking down lions and bears like David did, you are taking your stand of faith in the finished work of Jesus and what He has accomplished for you. As you do, watch God go to work on your behalf extinguishing every giant arrayed against you.
